At our Lash Salons we remain dedicated to genuine Russian Volume Techniques of meticulously hand-crafting each lash fan.

We frequently discuss the differences between Classic and Volume sets across our content. However, as the industry continues to expand in 2024, we increasingly find ourselves explaining the distinction held by the genuine Russian Volume we introduced in our business a decade ago over the now widely used pre-made fans.

1. Better Adhesion and Longevity
A key feature when you craft your lash fans custom to your client, at the appointment is that the fan can be precisely manipulated to wrap around the natural lash like a glove.

In comparison, pre-made fans are limited to surface-to-surface adhesion as by design, only one branch of the fan will be parallel to the client’s natural lash. This is visually demonstrated below. Superior 360-degree wrapping of handmade fans exponentially improves retention.

2. Fully Customised for Your Lashes
Lashes are not one-size-fits-all. Our lash artists will analyze your natural lashes and desired look, then custom create your full set using their Russian volume skills. They have an expansive range of extension types at their disposal – crafting fans from 2 to 8 lashes, in C, D, and J curls ranging from 7mm to 17mm lengths.

An artist restricted to pre-made fans would need over 240 different combinations to achieve this level of customization. Even for the most basic D Curl Lash Set – to be able to provide any combination a Lash Artist would need to have immediately available to them during your Lash Application the following 80 combinations.

We can assure you that the average Lash Tech is not servicing clients with 80 individual trays of lashes within her immediate reach. Our lash artists do cover this entire breadth with just 10 trays, which they then use to hand create the fans in any dimension they wish. Although this is not acknowledged, if your Lash Artist is not creating Russian Volume by hand, inevitably the diversity and perfect styling of your lash set will be limited.

The difference in Hand-Made and Pre-Made Volume Lash fans

By definition, the Russian Volume lash technique involves the creation of beautiful lash fans by hand, with 3-6 0.05mm-0.07mm diameter extensions. This fluffy, lightweight fan is attached to your individual natural lashes one by one, the thin base wrapping snugly around your natural eyelashes one by one. If it sounds complex – that’s because it is!

Lash Artists require passion and dedication that comes after years of training and practice to master this fine art. The last few years has seen the increase of the use of “handmade fans” in the industry . These are mass manufactured in a uniform, pre-made fan shape, have a thicker and heavier base and can not be wrapped around the eyelash so lay on top of it instead.

The fundamental skill of “creating the fan” is not required, which means a Lash Artist who has the most basic knowledge – akin to a beginner introductory level at TAFE,  can apply them without having had the practice or extensive training required for genuine volume.

You won’t be able to open your eyes for an hour or more while having Lash Extensions. You can’t afford to take a leap of faith when it comes to the application of medical grade adhesive millimetres from your eyes! Do your research + be sure of the technique and procedure once your eyes are closed. While we acknowledge a place for the express technique in our industry as it is much faster and therefore produces what should be cheaper “lash sets” we urge you to do your research and be aware of what you are signing up for. We only create customised Lash Sets by hand in all our Perth Lash Salons.

Why We Are on Team Handmade!

“Lash Fans” are the delicate bunches of fine volume extensions attached to individual natural lashes to create a Volume Set.

Handmade fans are created individually at your appointment. Where as pre-made fans are lash extensions that are mass produced, bunches of identical fans, supplied to the Lash Artist already bonded.

Call us old fashioned, but here’s a few of the reasons we don’t take this short cut:

1/ We Like Bespoke Versatile Sets: one size doesn’t fit all. When a Lash Artist has the skills to create by hand, they can tailor the fans to suit the client’s desired style, whether it’s natural, dramatic, or anything in between. This customization se extensions blend seamlessly with your natural lashes, enhancing your unique eye shape and overall appearance.

Be it a fuller, more glamorous look or a subtle enhancement you are after, creating by hand allows us to deliver.

2. Lightweight: Handmade fans are typically lighter in weight meaning they are less likely to weigh down your natural lashes. The reduced  risk of damage to your natural lashes ensures better long-term lash health!

4. Longer-lasting: because the fans have not been pre bonded, when we create a fan we can then wrap it around your natural lashes! THIS is the fundamental reason this method is better for you. We can place each fan to ensure optimal lash attachment, resulting in noticeably better retention. Ultimately this means fewer refills and a longer time between them.
