Do We Refill Lashes Done Elsewhere?

Eyelash refilling guide and tips

This is one of those questions we’ve been asked many times over the years – and the honest answer is that it’s evolved with the industry. As of 2025, our answer is… sometimes.

When we first started 15 years ago, the lash industry – in Perth especially – was still in its infancy. Volume was just being introduced and it wasn’t unusual for someone to come in with actual clusters (those things that are joined at the base by a visible bulb and meant to be worn overnight) superglued in – a safety concern more than anything. Back then, removals could take the entire appointment but were necessary because even attempting to fill that in was nothing but liability.

Preferring not to refill other lash work isn’t necessarily about thinking that your work is unparalleled – it’s mainly about the unknown variables that exist when literally inserting your own product in between someone else’s. It means you’re not only guaranteeing your own work but inheriting the risk for the entire set from that point forward.

Fast forward a few years and the industry really found its feet. In the years leading into COVID, not only lash services, but the lash supply side of the industry – training, and product supply – all hit a peak.

Dedicated artists were building full books, and standards were high because the demand was strong. Over this period we’ve had five or six of our OG team members go on to open their own salons – something we’re genuinely proud of and happy for them over! It definitely felt like the entire industry was lifting at once.

More recently, things have started to settle. Lashing has become a stable, recognised service — like hair or nails. But with that maturity, there’s also been a shift. There’s been a bit of a realisation that not every home operator will be able to stay in the game full time and while we are seeing some quiet exits, the overall quality of work has remained fairly high in our opinion.

We think this is partly because good-quality products are now more available and affordable than ever, and as information sharing continues to grow exponentially, we’re much more knowledgeable than we’ve ever been before.

So where does that leave us now with refilling lashes applied elsewhere?

As of 2025, our current position is that we will refill Classic and Hybrid sets done elsewhere. This is because Classic sets consist of all one lash type and are usually consistent across the board (and between Lash Artists), and the nature of the blend of styles inherent in Hybrid allows us some flexibility to incorporate a different style in both technique and product if necessary and adjust as needed.

We’ve chosen not to refill sets made with pre-mades – no shade – but it’s a completely different technique, and the visual difference is often too obvious when mixed with handmade. And when it comes to some of the more bespoke sets like Wispy, or even the different variations of Volume 4-6-8D, we don’t think we can guarantee a uniform result – so we’ve decided to stick to these parameters only.

Rather than charge an extra fee for taking over someone else’s work as we had in the past – we now simply guide clients to book a 3-week refill instead of a shorter 2-week appointment, regardless of when they last had them filled elsewhere. That gives us enough time to clean up and make adjustments, without adding much cost and covers us with a bit more room to breathe.

Of course, if we see that the existing set is causing damage – lashes stuck together, unsafe placement – we’ll always be upfront. In those cases, we may recommend removal or respectfully decline the refill. The same applies if the “refill” turns out to be just 2 or 3 lash extensions hanging on for dear life.

Ultimately, if we can maintain your lashes, save you time and money, and produce results we can stand behind – everybody wins.

If this is a service you need, just select one of the refill types I’ve mentioned and make a “foreign fill” note in the booking comments.

See you soon!

Hand-made Lash Extensions

At our Lash Salons we remain dedicated to genuine Russian Volume Techniques of meticulously hand-crafting each lash fan.

We frequently discuss the differences between Classic and Volume sets across our content. However, as the industry continues to expand in 2024, we increasingly find ourselves explaining the distinction held by the genuine Russian Volume we introduced in our business a decade ago over the now widely used pre-made fans.

1. Better Adhesion and Longevity
A key feature when you craft your lash fans custom to your client, at the appointment is that the fan can be precisely manipulated to wrap around the natural lash like a glove.

In comparison, pre-made fans are limited to surface-to-surface adhesion as by design, only one branch of the fan will be parallel to the client’s natural lash. This is visually demonstrated below. Superior 360-degree wrapping of handmade fans exponentially improves retention.

2. Fully Customised for Your Lashes
Lashes are not one-size-fits-all. Our lash artists will analyze your natural lashes and desired look, then custom create your full set using their Russian volume skills. They have an expansive range of extension types at their disposal – crafting fans from 2 to 8 lashes, in C, D, and J curls ranging from 7mm to 17mm lengths.

An artist restricted to pre-made fans would need over 240 different combinations to achieve this level of customization. Even for the most basic D Curl Lash Set – to be able to provide any combination a Lash Artist would need to have immediately available to them during your Lash Application the following 80 combinations.

We can assure you that the average Lash Tech is not servicing clients with 80 individual trays of lashes within her immediate reach. Our lash artists do cover this entire breadth with just 10 trays, which they then use to hand create the fans in any dimension they wish. Although this is not acknowledged, if your Lash Artist is not creating Russian Volume by hand, inevitably the diversity and perfect styling of your lash set will be limited.

Our commitment to upholding the true Russian volume tradition allows us to provide unmatched retention, comfort and fully personalised, stunning results. You can rely on our artists’ advanced skills to elevate your natural beauty.

Don’t settle for inferior pre-made fans – treat yourself to the luxurious investment you deserve in exquisitely handmade lash design. Click here to reserve your session with our acclaimed lash experts.

Why We Are on Team Handmade!

Why We Are on Team Handmade!

“Lash Fans” are the delicate bunches of fine volume extensions attached to individual natural lashes to create a Volume Set.

Handmade fans are created individually at your appointment. Where as pre-made fans are lash extensions that are mass produced, bunches of identical fans, supplied to the Lash Artist already bonded.

Call us old fashioned, but here’s a few of the reasons we don’t take this short cut:

1/ We Like Bespoke Versatile Sets: one size doesn’t fit all. When a Lash Artist has the skills to create by hand, they can tailor the fans to suit the client’s desired style, whether it’s natural, dramatic, or anything in between. This customization se extensions blend seamlessly with your natural lashes, enhancing your unique eye shape and overall appearance.

Be it a fuller, more glamorous look or a subtle enhancement you are after, creating by hand allows us to deliver.

2. Lightweight: Handmade fans are typically lighter in weight meaning they are less likely to weigh down your natural lashes. The reduced  risk of damage to your natural lashes ensures better long-term lash health!

4. Longer-lasting: because the fans have not been pre bonded, when we create a fan we can then wrap it around your natural lashes! THIS is the fundamental reason this method is better for you. We can place each fan to ensure optimal lash attachment, resulting in noticeably better retention. Ultimately this means fewer refills and a longer time between them.

Lash Industry Regulation in Perth and Australia

DISCLAIMER: The information contained on the Service is for general information purposes only. The Company assumes no responsibility for errors or omissions in the contents of the Service.

The average consumer is unaware that the Eyelash Extensions industry is still widely unregulated in Australia.

We were recently invited to bring the “salon perspective” in a news segment covering the ‘boom’ in the Lash Industry in Perth. In line with the global trend, we suggested it can partly be attributed to “Lashes” being one of the few treatments still visible behind a mask.

The story suggested the popularity surge has seen an increase in unqualified and inexperienced Lash Technicians looking to cash in. With few of them having invested in proper training or standards of care, it brought the question of Lash industry regulation into the spotlight.

While there are other protections in place under Australian Consumer Law and some rules enforced by the local council + health department, a savvy consumer should remember choosing a safe place for Eyelash Extensions in Perth is primarily down to them. There are other positives and negatives to the absence of an industry specific regulator for us all to consider too.

From the consumers perspective, a freer market means a wide range of operators are able to operate. From independent home operators to larger salons in commercial premises and beyond, increased competition leads to wider choice. Generally this keeps prices more affordable than they would be in a regulated market.

Wider competition supports businesses by increasing the size and longevity of our industry as a whole. It becomes motivation for us all to be as efficient and effective as possible and prevents larger businesses from creating a monopoly and forcing the smaller players out.

Less rules and regulations means room for growth and innovation which is highly evident in the Lash industry world wide. If you look at how far we have come not only over the last 5-10 years, but each and every year sees the industry evolving at a rapid pace .

So while it’s not all bad news, consumers in receipt of these benefits need to be vigilant in choosing which of the wide choice of operators they trust.

Remember, at its most basic description an Eyelash Extension application uses point-sharp tweezers to attach 0.05mm diameter extensions right next to the eyes with medical grade adhesive! There’s no need for panic but a little research into a treatment of this nature is well worth while.
